Conté à Paris

The history of Conté à Paris products cannot be separated from the personality of the company’s founder, Nicolas Jacques Conté. Born in 1755, he claimed the title of painter, chemist, physicist, hot air baloonist and inventor during the fifty years he lived. Nicolas Jacques Conté’s historical achievement is undeniable. In 1794, he developed the modern graphite lead from a mixture of clay and graphite, thus making it finally possible to create different grades of hardness for pencils. The pencil factory he set up in 1795 enabled France to at least produce its own calligraphy and drawing material. A few years later, he developed “pencils without sleeves” (bare leads) replacing those made from “Italian stone”. He worked on making the colours “fixed and unchangeable” to meet the requirements of the painters of the day. Artists’ pencils and pastels were thus born. Over the decades, the quality of its products and the extent of its ranges have enabled Conté à Paris to establish itself as a true reference for artists world-wide. Used by top masters, amateur artists and art students alike, Conté à Paris offers the widest variety of techniques and effects possible for drawing , sketching and pastel work.

Arches Paper

Arches paper is high quality, air-dried paper that is used by printers and watercolorists. It has a warm white colour and hot-pressed, cold-pressed, and rough varieties. Arches paper is valued for its durability, and is made in the village of Arches in the Vosges, France.

Arches watercolor papers are mould-made with 100% cotton fiber. The papers are acid-free, pH-neutral, gelatin-sized, and air-dried.

The history of Arches starts in 1492 when the Arches site completed the amalgamation of the paper-making facilities around the village of Arches, south of Epinal.

The Moulins d’Arches turned to the production of high quality paper for writings and art publications. The mill thus produced paper for incunables (the name given to the first printed books), such as the Chronique de Gutenberg by Dürer. Also printed on Arches paper was the “Description of Egypt” commissioned by Napoleon I upon his return from his Egyptian campaign. The work was used by the royalty from 1809 to 1828.

Ecobra

The ECOBRA Company was established 1893 in Nuremberg by a master craftsman called Johann Eichmüller. In the Middle Ages many compass forges were located in this area.
From then on ECOBRA has been dealing with the construction and manufacturing of compasses both for  the educational and the professional sector.
After some years of business very active trade relations started with the USA, where at that time the industrialization set in.

In 1922 the company was transformed into a public limited company named “Bayerische Reißzeugfabrik AG” formerly “Eichmüller & Co.”
Later on ECOBRA got its name out of the company’s initials EICHMÜLLER & CO. BAYERISCHE REISSZEUGFABRIK AKTIIENGESELLSCHAFT  and hence the world-famous trademark “ECOBRA” was born.

EICHMÜLLER & COBAYERISCHE REISSZEUGFABRIK AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT.

2 pressure levers and automatic setting of the spindle. Even today this modern type of compass is sold very well.
